1st Annual Dash for Deaf Education 5K
The 1st Annual Dash for Deaf Education 5K Run/Walk was held on Monday, November 11th, at the Maryland School for the Deaf. The unseasonably warm and sunny day provided perfect weather for over 270 people to participate in this event. The runners and walkers ranged in age from 2 years old to 74 years young. A huge thank you is extended to participants from the local Frederick community and to those who made an extra effort to participate in this event as they traveled from all over Maryland, and as far as Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and DC. Near or far, runners or walkers, hearing or Deaf, young or young at heart, these individuals came together to personally support student success at the Maryland School for the Deaf.
This event demonstrates the power of how one person can help to make a positive and lasting impact for many. The event’s $12,000.00 net profit will directly benefit the MSD Foundation’s projects: scholarships and performance awards for deserving MSD students, campus learning technologies, leadership camp tuition and more.
The 5K Run/Walk’s success is also due to the generous and caring sponsors and in-kind donors. A heartwarming thank you is extended to our Gold Sponsor, Frederick Precast Concrete, Inc. The generosity of Greg Ouimette, his family and employees, have been overwhelming during 2006. Additionally, the MSD Foundation is grateful to our Silver Sponsors, Bray & Scarff and MD Relay, and our Bronze Sponsors, Best Buy and Invitrogen, respectfully. Further gratitude is expressed to our Major Sponsors, K. Hovnanian Homes and Proffitt and Associates, and our Friends including IWIF Workers’ Compensation Insurance, Morningside Inn, Lafarge, Autobody Dimensions of Frederick, Bloom Grocery Store, BB’s Bagels and Bread, The Common Market, Costco, Cactus Farm Graphics and Airport View Signs.
The behind the scene organization of this endeavor would not have been possible without the goodwill of our volunteers. Over 40 people wore bright orange 5K volunteer shirts as they helped with registration, monitored the courses, assisted with the craft tables and the overall setting up and cleaning up of the event. Many thanks to the MSD students and staff, MSD Foundation board members, and CCBC ASL students for making time in their very early morning to be a part of this event. Further gratitude is expressed to Mary Ouimette, Erin Buck and KC Russell for their unwavering support throughout the initiation and completion of this event.
Last but not least, many thanks to Lt. Martyak and the volunteer police, Ron Pearcey and the Board of Directors of Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick Mayor, Jeff Hotlzinger, MSD Superintendent, James Tucker, the great staff of Key 103, Wayne Kretzer, Lori Bonheyo, Kevin Kovarcik, Marsha Flowers, Loraine Stoltz, Jane Redding and boy scouts, Diane Kubey and MSD’s Jr. Varsity Cheerleaders and the Frederick Steeplechasers for taking part and adding their special contributions to our inaugural 5K.
I am exceptionally pleased with the 1st annual event, and will look forward to an even more impressive 2nd Annual Dash for Deaf Education 5K Run/Walk! For more information on the MSD Foundation and fundraising events, please visit www.MSD-Foundation.org.
